Pruning an apple tree in winter is a crucial task for maintaining both health and productivity. From a pruner’s perspective, apple trees can quickly grow large and unruly without regular maintenance, making them harder to manage and harvest. Winter is the ideal time to prune—when the tree is dormant—allowing you to remove dead or diseased wood and shape the tree for better sunlight penetration and airflow. A key lesson for clients: “If you cannot reach the fruit, the tree is too tall!” Keeping the tree at a manageable height ensures easier harvesting and encourages strong fruit production. Regular pruning also promotes strong, healthy growth, resulting in a more fruitful, beautiful tree year after year!
