Time lapse video of me reversing the shearing of a Japanese Maple. It would have been better to leave this tree alone rather than take the shears to it. Cutting to the same place every year is not great for this plant and leads to internal dieback from lack of sunlight. Hedges can be sheared because the shrubs used can tolerate pruning of this nature. Proper hand pruning can give you a refined formal sphere look, but it doesn’t have to come from shears.
